Beyond Parties: A Reflective New Year Tradition

Many people generally spend New Year’s Eve and 31st night partying, drinking, and eating with friends. For us, this year wasn’t that at all. Somehow, neither of us (Meghana and I) was interested in drinking or partying.

We stayed home, and since our dog, Luna was very nervous about the fireworks, we took it easy while cuddling with her. We had a good, healthy meal, and most of the holidays were alcohol-free for us, and we’re good with that.

That evening, instead of just binge-watching something, Meghana suggested we play a game. Do a retrospective or look back at 2023. While she indicated that she wasn’t just thinking about talking, she was taking notes..!

She had the following questions that we both had to answer:

  • What did I do for myself this year? How did that make me feel?
  •  What did I feel good about? If not answered above
  •  What did I not feel good about? Any strong emotions?
  •  What goals do I want to set for 2024?

Doing this with her was so refreshing; it made us talk about some great experiences and problematic topics. The exercise lasted over an hour, but we got a lot out of that discussion.

When all of it was done, Meghana made a remark that just stuck with me and inspired this post. Work wasn’t a part of any of the above discussions!

I am hoping this becomes an annual tradition for us.
